Itinerary

Day 1: Wednesday, January 31, 2024Arrive in Mexico City

Morning departure from Detroit Metropolitan Airport. On arrival, we will meet our tour guide and transfer to our hotel. Gather tonight for a welcome dinner.

Overnight Mexico City

Day 2: Thursday, February 1, 2024Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Today we will spend the day visiting the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, “The Patroness of the Americas.” We celebrate Mass in the brilliantly colored, modern Basilica dedicated in 1976. Join your prayers with those of other pilgrims as you kneel before the altar displaying the astounding Tilma, the sackcloth bearing the image of the Holy Virgin. We will also visit the Church of the Hill, Church of the Well, Monument of the Offerings and Church of the Indians. There will be leisure time this afternoon to visit the shrine.

Overnight Mexico City

Day 3: Friday, February 2, 2024Metropolitan Cathedral, Great Pyramid of Tenochtitlán

Today we will tour downtown Mexico City. We will participate in Mass and a tour of the largest cathedral in Latin America, the Metropolitan Cathedral. Throughout our time in the Cathedral, we’ll see stunning paintings, altar pieces and statues as well as the Tomb of Bishop Zumarraga. Bishop Zumarraga was the first Bishop of Mexico and was a witness to the vision of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Our guided tour continues as we visit the National Palace, the Main Square known as the Zócalo and the Great Pyramid of Tenochtitlán known as the Templo Mayor.

Overnight Mexico City

Day 4: Saturday, February 3, 2024Shrine of San Miguel Del Milagro, Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary, Biblioteca Palafoxiana

Following breakfast, we start our day at the Mission San Buenaventura, the last mission to be founded during St. Serra’s lifetime. We continue to the “Queen of the Missions,” Mission Santa Barbara,
the only mission to have remained in Franciscan custody since its founding date. Before leaving Santa Barbara, we take time to appreciate its lovely shops and streets, enjoying lunch on our own and a little time for exploration. Later, we proceed to Solvang, a Danish town where the old-world charm of Northern Europe meets the blue skies of Southern California. Upon arrival, we enjoy a smorgasbord, a Scandinavian buffet-style meal at a traditional Danish restaurant.

Overnight Mexico City

Day 5: Sunday, February 4, 2024Santa Maria Tulpetlac, Pyramids of Teotihuacan, National Palace of Fine Arts

We enjoy breakfast at our hotel, followed by a tour of the Mission Santa Ines, noted as one of the best-preserved California Missions. We continue our day at the Dierberg Drum Canyon Vineyard, where we have the opportunity to enjoy a wine tasting (at your own cost) and tour. From here we journey north to visit the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, the 5th mission which was founded by St. Junipero himself. The area was dubbed by earlier hunters the ‘Canyon of the Bears’ and when food began to run low at other missions, St. Junipero sent a hunting mission to the area to test the legend. The mission was a huge success and Mission San Luis Obispo was founded. We finish our day at Morro Bay. We can see why the bay’s prominent ‘Morro Rock’, a volcanic plug, is commonly known as the Gibraltar of the Pacific. The area boasts miles of unspoiled beaches and nature trails to roam. Later, we check into our hotel for dinner.

Overnight Mexico City

Day 6: Monday, February 5, 2024Return Home

We celebrate Mass at the Church where Blessed Fr. Miguel Pro, S.J. served. Fr. Miguel was martyred for his faith last century under the Calles Regime. We head for the airport for our return flight home.
